Futurisca A computational laboratory for the future
The data room

Know exactly what to upload, and where

Put the organisation inside the model. Seven kinds of file, each a CSV with a header row, each column named and explained, every row checked before anything is kept. From then on every run says what it does to the company, line by line, with the chain from your figure to the run's figure to the result written out.

From a file to an answer

What happens to a row you upload

dataroomSeven kinds of file on the left, every row checked at the gate, the accepted ones placed on the countries they name, and the run against the baseline turning each into a change.
  1. 01 / 07

Choose the file, or paste the rows

In the simulator, the Company tab, the data room. Each kind of file has its own card listing its columns, which are required and what each one means, and a button that downloads the header row to start from.

    • Country as ISO code, two letter code or name
    • Numbers with thousands separators are read as numbers
  2. 02 / 07

    Every row is checked

A missing required column refuses the file and names the column. A country the model does not know, a negative spend, a latitude past ninety or a year outside the range refuses the row and says which rule it broke. Nothing is kept until you have seen the report and pressed keep.

    • Refused rows are listed with the reason
    • A file replaces the previous one of its kind
  3. 03 / 07

It is kept where you can see it

Signed in with an account that may save, the files are kept against that account, rebuilt on the server from the columns each kind of file allows and capped at two megabytes. Otherwise they stay in this browser only. They are not sent anywhere else, and one control deletes all of them.

    • Two presses to delete, so a slip cannot
    • The profile says where the company reports from
  4. 04 / 07

    Every run reads the company

Revenue moves with demand in each country at the sector's sensitivity, or your own fitted from your history, and with that country's currency against yours. Costs move with tariffs on the route, the model's prices for chips, energy and food, and the supplier's currency. Sites are rated against conflict, stability, tension and the risk premium in that country.

    • Each line opens into its chain
    • Past a doubling a price means rationing, and is flagged as supply at risk
  5. 05 / 07

    And across every future

The same company is then priced in each future the run played, against the same future of the baseline, with that future's own output, prices, exchange rates and the levers of the way it took. So the tab can say how wide the outcome is, how many futures lose, how many lose more than a twentieth of revenue, and what the company faces in each way a sentence could go.

    • The spread, drawn future by future
    • What is kept at the median is named
  6. 06 / 07

    And under stress

The shocks your own files point to (unrest or an export stop at your largest supplier, tariffs on its route, the chokepoint your supply most likely passes, a chip or oil shock where you buy those, a currency crisis and a recession in your largest markets, a world financial crisis, a pandemic) are each run alone and priced line by line in every year, ranked by the worst year, with the supply each one puts at risk beside the money. Any of them runs in full as the scenario with one press.

    • Built from your files, not from a list
    • Revenue splits by segment where your file names one
  7. 07 / 07

    And today

Every country in your files is read against the Live desk: its pressure now and what makes it up, beside what the company has there. Every supplier's likely sea route is read against the live state of its chokepoints. For every flagged input, the countries with the capacity to replace it are ranked by stability, reach of the scenario and bloc.

    • Routes are a reading of the map, and say so
    • Options to examine, not advice

The seven files, column by column

In the order that sharpens the answers most. The first three are what no run can say anything about the company without.

FileRequiredOptionalWhat it lets every run say
Revenue by countrycountry, revenuesegment, yearHow much revenue is at stake in each country, from demand in that economy and its currency against yours.
Suppliers and inputs by countrycountry, spendcategory, supplier, criticalWhat inputs cost through tariffs, the model's chip, energy and food prices and the supplier's currency, and which supply is at risk from sanctions, export controls, conflict or instability.
Sites and assetsname, countrylat, lon, kind, value, peopleThe operating conditions at each site, rated low, watch or high against the run.
Your own historyyear, revenuemarket_growthWith four years or more of market growth, the company's own sensitivity to demand, fitted, replacing the sector default; and the width of its own band.
People by countrycountry, headcountcostLocal inflation carried into the wage bill, and the local job market.
Energy billcountry, costmwhThe model's energy price carried into the bill.
Borrowing and cash by currencycurrency, amountkindWhat the model's currency moves do to debt owed and cash held.

And the world under your markets

The company's answers rest on the world figures for its own countries. The data room ranks which of those are still estimates and says where to get each one.

01

What to upload next

A ranked list, always current: first what no run can answer without, then what replaces an assumption with your own figure, then the world figures under your own markets that are still estimates.

02

Where to get each figure

Seventeen come from the World Bank refresh in one step. For the rest the page names a public publisher: the IMF World Economic Outlook for public debt, the central bank for the policy rate, the UN World Population Prospects for median age, the Energy Institute Statistical Review for energy and oil, FAO food balance sheets for food, WRI Aqueduct for water stress, the Worldwide Governance Indicators for stability and governance.

03

One set of files for the organisation

An administrator can publish the company's files to the team, and every member can use them in place of files of their own, so two people asking about the company are asking about the same company.

04

Where to put it

Administrators paste world figures straight into the Company tab: four columns, iso, field, value and year. Every row is checked against its field's range before anything is stored, and a figure you supply is marked as yours wherever it appears.

Put the company in the model

Open the simulator, then the Company tab. The whole reading opens as a report for print or PDF.
